CDL Schools and Truck Driving Training
A commercial driver's license (CDL) is issued by your state, but since February 7, 2022 first-time Class A and Class B applicants must first complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. This section lists both: colleges that report truck-driving awards to the Department of Education, and every public, in-person Class A training location in the FMCSA registry.

How CDL training works
- Entry-level driver training is a federal rule (49 CFR Part 380). Your trainer must be on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, and the provider reports your completion to the registry before you can take the skills test. Read the rule.
- You first get a commercial learner's permit (CLP) from your state, and you must hold it at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test. 49 CFR 383.25.
- Interstate driving requires you to be 21. The state DMV sets fees, testing locations and medical card handling.
Two ways to pay: you pay a school (cash, loans, or workforce funds from your local American Job Center), or a carrier pays in exchange for a work commitment. Read company-paid CDL training, explained before you sign anything, and how to check a school is registered.
BLS puts the median annual wage for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers nationally at $58,640 (middle 80% from $40,140 to $79,380), May 2025. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Questions, answered from the data
Do I need to go to a CDL school?
If you are getting a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading from B to A, or adding a school bus, passenger or hazmat endorsement, federal entry-level driver training rules (in effect since February 7, 2022) require you to complete theory and behind-the-wheel training with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before the skills or knowledge test that applies.
How many CDL schools are on the FMCSA registry?
Our copy of the registry dated 2026-11-02 lists 2,934 in-person, Active locations that are open to the public and teach Class A behind-the-wheel, run by 1,982 providers. Most registry entries are private fleet programs that only train their own drivers; we leave those out.
Is a CDL school on this site guaranteed to be approved?
No. We show the registry as of the date above. FMCSA removes providers regularly, so search the provider on tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov before you pay.
